Oedipus The King is a story about the king of Thebes, how he came to power, and how his rise to power ultimately proved to be the reason for his demise. In the beginning of the play Oedipus is speaking to his people who are suffering from the plague. ... (602)
Oedipus requests that a blind prophet named, Tiresias, be summoned for advice. ... Tiresias refuses to tell the King what he knows but when Oedipus threatens him with torture he reveals that Oedipus is the murderer of Laius, “I say you are the murderer you hunt” (609). After hearing this, Oedipus then accuses Creon of putting Tiresis up to the accusation and charges Creon of being a traitor. Jocasta, Oedipus’ wife, comes in to defind her brother and explains to Oedipus about the oracle that came to visit Laius (her previous husband) and what it had told him. ... But Laius, so the report goes at least was killed by strangers, thieves, at a place where the three roads meet…(618)
Oedipus remembers that he was once at a place where the three roads meet and that he had killed a man there. When a messenger comes and tells Oedipus that Polybus has died he feels somewhat relieved because he realizes he did not have a hand in the death of his father. ... Then a messenger comes to Oedipus and tells him that Polybus and Merope are not his birth parents. ... After this is revealed Oedipus learns that Jocasta, his wife, and also his mother, has hung herself in the palace. Oedipus enters her room and takes a brooch from her robe. ... Creon then assumes the position of king and Oedipus is taken by the guards.
