The Great Gatsby wasn’t so great anymore and the roar of the roaring twenties began to fade. The decade of jazz, underground clubs, and glamorous parties would slip away into memory, only to be replaced by poverty and despair. The stock market crash of October 24, 1929 was the starting point of America’s Great Depression. Thousands of banks across the U.S. failed, and money being saved was now put in cookie jars or tossed under mattresses. Lines to underground clubs changed into lines for food. The Depression was not only in reference to the economy but the people as well. The people needed an escape from reality and horseracing became that refuge.
