Nocturne, an indispensable musical genre, was invented in 1812 by John Field. It was until the 1830s, when the genre nocturne emerged and underwent drastic changes, both in its structure and style. The definition of Nocturne, tentatively speaking, is a piece of music ¡§performed at night.¡¨ (Czerny) It is also believed that the nocturne is an ¡§imitation of those vocal pieces which are termed Serenades¡¨. A typical nocturne¡¦s qualities would be ¡§a graceful and sweet melody, tender and mysterious, simple phrases, harmony that is not elaborate, but full, mellow, and without triviality¡¨ (Castil-Blaze 1821). Without doubt, Nocturne and romance are apparently interchangeable in one sense. The structure of a nocturne is always ABA or ABAB form, where A and B are respectively a subject themselves. Featuring a simple melody which becomes increasingly decorated as the piece progresses, a Nocturne uses to have a thick texture maintained by a rich and straightforward harmony and the sustaining pedal.
