Teachers spend most of their time moving about the classroom helping children learn. The fast-paced and stimulating environment, however, can also be stressful and demanding. Teachers spend much of their work day isolated from other adults, unable to take unscheduled restroom or coffee breaks. Teachers usually do not yet have easy access to telephones, copying machines, fax machines, or computers. Many children are disruptive, and some teachers work in potentially violent environments. Public school teachers labor in bureaucratic settings. According to the 1990-91 SASS survey (NCES, 1993), only 39 percent of teachers believed that they had significant influence over discipline policy, the content of inservice training (33 percent), the grouping of students (29 percent), or establishing the curriculum (37 percent).
