Routine Language Problems I suppose everybody in Europe has tried to learn a foreign language. Most of us learn (or don’t learn) a foreign language at high school. There, you only get thre or four hours of French or German learning:English a week. D’you think that’s enough? I don’t! And lots of the time the books are boring or the teacher’s boring or it’s first thing in the morning or last thing in the afternoon. I think some people are luckier than others. They can pick up a foreign language easily and quickly. They can remember words the first or second time they hear them. I mean, they don’t always remember them perfectly roight away; they make little mistakes of pronunciation or they put the words in the wrong order. It’s funny, but even though they make mistakes, nobody laughs at them. The teachers don’t seem to mind that these students make lots of mistakes. Teachers only geŭt really angry with students who don’t say anything for ages and then when the teacher forces them to talk, they get everything wrong. Why is that? Of course, there must be diferent ways of learning a language, because people are all different. You know, there are shy people, sort of naturally quiet people. They don’t say very much in their own language. Well, maybe they do in ordinary life, like when they’re talking to a friend or somebody they work with. But they would never stand up and speak in front of ten or fifteen other people! They’d be scared of making a meestake and looking really stupid.
