The Catcher in the Rye is a story about a young man that goes by the name of Holden Caulfield. Holden narrates in the first person, describing directly what he experiences. The story takes place between the end of the fall semester and Christmas time. This entire book mainly focuses on a span of time over a long weekend during the late 1940s or early 1950s. Holden is sixteen years old at this point, and attending Pencey prep school in Pennsylvania after failing out of three other schools. Holden seems to be continuing his streak as he is informed that he is failing four out of five of his classes and is going to be expelled from Pencey.
Important characters in this book include Ackley (a neighbor) and his roommate Stradlater. In one circumstance, Holden becomes jealous of Stradlater after he finds out that Stradlater is taking Jane Gallagher out on a date. Holden has feelings for Jane and literally attacks Stradlater. This fight marks the pinnacle point in which Holden decides that he is going to leave Pencey early and stay in a hotel in Manhattan without telling his parents that he is back...
