The attached transcript is the beginning five minute section of an interaction recorded with Bob . Bob is in his late forties, is registered blind and also suffers from a physical disability. He has recently moved from residential care, where he has lived for the majority of his life, into his own self-contained apartment. His daily living is assisted by two personal carers who are employed by Bob under the Governments' recently introduced "Direct Payments" scheme. The interaction attempted to explore Bob's feelings regarding the move and to discuss them in a helping manner.
To start with I began by asking Bob some general questions about what it was like to have lived in residential care. Rather than simply asking "Did you like living in residential care?", I attempted to gain more of an insight by asking an open ended question as in Line 12. Open ended questions such as this one do not invite a yes or no response but encourage the client to express the answer in their own way. Even so, the question still bought about a one word answer "Awful"...
