Baroque Art
All artistic expression in the Baroque period followed the same basic ideas. Characteristics frequently associated with this period are movement, drama, emotion, and a tendency to blur distinctions between various art forms. In the seventeenth century, everything from sculpture to literature was inspired by the concepts of realism and naturalism. In all art forms, there was a desire to evoke emotion by appealing to the senses, often in dramatic ways.
In the Italian painting, "Cherubs at Play," the distinctiveness of Baroque style is entirely realized. The painter of this work is unknown, but the subject is a prime example of Baroque art. Angels depicted as unclothed babies are seen in a variety of seventeenth century artwork. Subjects of Baroque art were mostly religious, and the innocence of children played a vital role in most art of the time period.
