Thomas Hardy was born was born on the edgon heath, Dorset in 1870, an area similar to the imaginary county of wessex where his novels are set. After attending the village school in Higher Brockhampton Thomas Hardy began to find out the folklore and grimmer facts of the English countryside. Son of a builder and master mason, Hardy was interested in architecture and when leaving school and became an apprentice at the age of 16. Hardy moved to London for more work but had to move back to the country side due to ill health. Two years later he was offered a position based at Weymouth, and wilst he was working at a church in cornwall he met his first wife, Emma Lavinia Gifford who married later in 1874. Hardy handed in his notice, the couple went on a hooney moon in Brighton. They had a difficult marriage and Hardy was said to have had several affairs.
With a career lasting over 50 years, hardy is rememberd mainly for his short storys. Hardy became confident that his novel wrint could earn him a living and devoted all his time to it.
