It is no easy thing to set out on a journey of 400 miles to a land you have never seen, yet that is precisely what one of God's most faithful servants was called by God to do. Many times during the trek to the land of Canaan Abraham must have wondered what was in store for his future. Imagine what it must have been like.
For Abraham, the journey began in the city of Haran, located just off the river Euphrates. What a task it must have been for him to prepare a group of about 500 people for such a trip as this. As he started the journey south, the city of Haran would have been behind him, holding memories of his father, of the security they had while living there, while ahead he was looking at hilly country, strewn with rocks and sparsely populated with trees. Water would be essential to the survival of the livestock Abraham brought with him, so likely they would have traveled near rivers and streams. On and on they marched through the country until in the distance they could see mountains. As they neared the mountains, the terrain became much more difficult, with boulders becoming increasingly challenging to navigate around, and grazing land for the cattle was not as lush.
