School uniform policies have often been thought of as cheap, inexpensive ways to straighten up unruly kids in a hurry, but do uniforms actually live up to their expectations? Many schools that use uniforms, both private and public, have claimed they reduce the rate of crime and disorder in the everyday scheme of things. However, there are numerous studies which claim uniforms are nothing but a cover up and should not be used. This issue has been disputed since uniforms first came out in public schools and continues today with more and more schools choosing the uniform way. Currently in American schools, parents, administration, and students are being presented with the subject of school uniforms; however, research shows that uniforms may not be beneficial for all school situations.
Uniforms in public school systems have not really been around in the United States for very long. In 1995, Long Beach, California became the first public school district to implement the use of similar dress for all children (Wilkins 1). Soon after, numerous other schools followed Long Beach in the direction of uniforms. Many schools saw uniforms as a new opportunity to make students feel safer and less stressed during the school day. Denis Doyle, founder of Doyle Associates, an educational consulting firm states "'The reason for introducing uniforms is not to impose conformity, but to inject a sense of purpose, and to devalue, at least for the school day, the idea that our material coverings are what make us individuals in the first place'" (Catkins 4)...
