Fame in Beowulf
Being famous is what many people secretly desire. The admiration, publicity, and envy that come with fame are enticing. In Beowulf, the yearning for fame is so obvious as Beowulf risked his life fighting off dragons to become the notorious king.
Beowulf jeopardized his own life to protect others from the wrath of Grendel and his mother. For example, line 657 states, " the fiend reached towards him with his open hand; at once Beowulf perceived his evil plan, sat up and stayed Grendel's outstretched arm." By this one can see how appealing fame was to Beowulf. He wanted eminence more than he wanted to protect his own life. Beowulf also went looking for Grendel's mother in a putrid, swampy lake. He wanted to find her so that she could do no more damage to the people. Beowulf knew he could keep his high caliber by killing another beast...
