In this novel, Their Eyes were Watching God, the protagonist, Janie, is on a journey for Independence. Janie goes through three marriages with three men with different characteristics. She is able to assert herself the least with her first husband Logan Killicks; on the other hand, she is able to assert herself the most with Tea Cake, her last husband but her first love. She attains independence after the death of Jody Starks, her second husband and Tea Cake helps gain independence that she never had.
After Nanny spots Janie kissing Johnny Taylor, she forces Janie into marriage with Logan Killicks. She explains that he is a "good man" but Janie sees him as "some ole skullhead in de grave yard". Their contrasting view on marriage interacts because while Janie sees that marriage is connected over love, Nanny sees it as Janie's financial security and that love is not essential for marriage. They never interact, due to their age difference and non-loving relationship they have. Therefore, Janie feels unloved by Logan and feels insecure all the time. A year after their marriage, Logan starts making her in the field and treats Janie like as if she was a farm animal...
