Angela Davis
The autobiography of Angela Davis describes her life story through parts of the book. Each part of the book is named in relation to the steps she takes in her life story. Davis has named these particular chapters nets, rocks, waters, flames, walls and brides.
The first of these chapters in which Davis describes her experiences is nets and rocks. In these chapters Davis describes her upbringing and early life and how she was exposed to Communism. Angela Davis was raised in Birmingham, Alabama during a time of racial unrest and civil rights activism. Many of the nations problems considering racial unrest stirred up right there in Alabama. Both of Davis' parents were teachers and had many Communist friends, which influenced her. As a teenager, Davis participated in civil rights demonstrations and formed interracial study groups. Later, the American Friends Committee at Elizabeth Irwin High School gave Davis a scholarship to attend school where she joined a Communist youth group...
