The Simple Gifts Simple Gift
In the simple gift all the characters express a simple gift which betters another characters life in some way. In this book Old Bill gives his simple gift to Billy, by giving him a house, sharing his street skills and showing him true friendship. While Billy shows Caitlin a special gift by giving his love to her and taking her to a life she had wanted to have but her parents had stopped it. Mean while Old Bill helps Caitlin by showing her how good life is and teaches her to accept him as more than a hobo.
Billy had come from a father who did not love him, a town which did not appreciate him and a school which could not accept, he had never really fitted in. But Old Bill changed that, Old Bill had had a hard life and was in many ways like Billy, for instance he had chosen a life of poverty over wealth. Old Bill started to like the kid as he helped Old Bill over his problem with alcohol and his memories of his dead daughter and wife. Old bills simple gift was to give Billy a second chance in life, he also taught him how to survive without any money, and how to provide for himself with work, that is Old Bills simple gift which gave Billy a second chance and the freedom he had always wished for.
Caitlin met Billy when she was working shifts and her work, MacDonald's. At first she found it weird and though it wasn't natural for someone to do that as she had been living in a rich world, but things seemed to change very fast when she talked to him remotely, she saw he wasn't ashamed of what he was and was very impressed...
