Perfume, by Patrick Sskind is a novel set in the slums of 18th century Paris, with a story that could be set in any time period. It has a unique story line, and accurate historical detail. The main character, Grenouille, is a man who himself has no scent, but he has extraordinary sense. He has the ability to smell everything with great detail, including rocks and insects. As he travels through France, Grenouille struggles with his odd ability, along with many other problems he faces.
Grenouille was born on July 17, 1783, under a gutting table in a market in Paris. The past four children his mother had given birth to had been stillbirths, so she figured this birth would be no different. When she passed out from the pain, someone called the police. When the baby under the table, Grenouille, started to cry, the mother was arrested. She was found guilty of multiple infanticide and decapitated...
