Why the Duck Population is on the Rise
The duck population is the highest it has been in many years. In 2002, the number of ducks estimated was only 31.2 million birds. In 2003, however the number increased to 36.2 million birds. An overall increase of five million ducks. Many factors affect the increase in the duck population in North America. Ducks Unlimited secured millions of more acres in the northern plains for refuge, hunters did not harvest as many ducks last season, but most significantly the weather in the plains was perfect for the breeding ducks.
Ducks Unlimited is an organization that is concerned with the preservation of ducks. In order to preserve these beautiful animals, Ducks Unlimited raises millions of dollars each year to buy refuge land for the ducks to use without any hunting pressure...
