Modern policing dates back a few hundred years, but it wasn't until recent decades that the idea of Community Oriented Policing originated. Community Oriented Policing deals with police being proactive. This means that they anticipate and seek out the crimes that occur in their communities, rather then the typical reactive police unit, who only responded to calls for help. Proactive policing also deals with improving the quality of life that the people in the community experience. Police now work in social situations as often as they work in crime scenes. The way that ideas changed from reactive policing to proactive policing came about through three distinct policing eras in time. They were the Political, Reform, and Community eras. These three very different eras of policing defined what we think of police today and gave purpose to the way police go about their daily routine.
