Abstract
In the next few pages, I will discuss the organizational design and structure of the company for whom I work, and how well we follow Max Weber's model of the Six Principles of Bureaucratic Structure. I will address both strengths and weaknesses of the IT departments, and recommend changes to improve accountability, increase productivity and enhance information flow.
Organizational Design and Structure
The company for whom I work has a vertical differentiation at the executive level and a horizontal differentiation at both the functional and individual level.
This current structure works well at the executive level with the company's authoritative structure. It also creates a clear hierarchy of authority as explained on page 500 of our text since Information Technology managers have considerable responsibility and authority (Frenzel). However, there are some problems within the functional and individual layers of this organization's Information Technology departments. The informality between the functional and individual layers tends to place functional heads at the same level as the individual. Although this has facilitated the learning and problem solving process among developers, it has made it difficult for the department heads to step into managerial roles when administering discipline. This can create a "cloudy" hierarchy between the functional and individual layers since the differentiation is not as clearly defined as that of the executive level.
