Long ago in the United States in the1860's there was a lot of prejudice going on which is actually hard to believe since now in the 2000's everybody is treated equally. All this prejudice was happening because of how the US constitution and how it had is flaws. However the African Americans did have some type of rights before the Jim Crow Laws, 14th and 15th amendment, and the Role of Supreme Court took place, after that the African Americans rights were all lost.
The Jim Crow laws were basically laws that imposed racism against African Americans and segregation mainly in the South in about 1865 until the 1960's. Before these laws, the African American did have every right because of the Reconstruction act and the thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments and the Civil Rights Act of 1875. But all these rights got taken away after the reconstruction ended in 1877, and the whites started to become less supportive of the Civil Rights so the prejudice starts to flare. Then in 1890's the Supreme Court's decisions went against the Reconstruction by promoting prejudice once again.
The constitution especially amendment 14 and 15 are meant to be understood against racism. It says that if you were born in the US you are automatically a citizen, and everybody in the US get the same voting rights which were actually taken away from the African Americans, because rules were enforced like the grandfather clause, pole tax and literacy test which were tests that they had to take so they could be eligible to vote. Unfortunately the Supreme Court said the Civil Rights Act was unconstitutional and that amendment 14 never prohibited people and private organizations from discriminating race...
