In the boom period that ended in 1929, labor unions succeeded in almost all countries in enforcing wage rates higher than the market rates. When the inescapable Great Depression came, there was rampant unemployment. The burden of the unemployed was a serious menace to domestic peace but even then the union leaders did not retractable and chose to adjust the money relation and commodity prices to the height of wage rates. According to them devaluation was the only answer. The champions of this policy were not ready to accept the fact that the devaluation was in fact to reduce the wage rates. If you look at devaluation from the eyes of an economist, you can see that the advantages of devaluation are just temporary.
