Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. He was the sixth child of John and Jane Clemens. In 1839, his family moved to nearby Hannibal where he spent his time growing up. During his youth, he spent most of his time along the Mississippi where the town was located near.
After almost a year and a half, Samuel left the Enterprise for San Francisco avoiding a duel with a local editor. While in San Francisco, he worked for Call, the local paper as a full time reporter. He worked there four the next four years also writing for other publications. In 1866, he took a four-month trip to Hawaii as a correspondent for the Sacramento Union. After his return, he organizes lectures on the Sandwich Islands and starts to promote himself at lecture tours. Samuel leaves California at the end of 1866 to head to New York City...
