"Harold and Maude" a charming little flick, is a story about a young man struggling to come to terms with life. He constantly antagonizes his mother and is very hard shelled about his emotions and inner self. Harold enjoyed death so much that he even attended funerals of people he didn't even know. It was then, that Harold met Maude, a vivacious older women who has a zest for life.
Maude upon introducing herself to Harold, asking him if he could sing or dance, recognized the lack of life Harold had, and figured she's do something about it. Befriending Harold by inviting him into her life, Maude laid out the different elements of life for him. She brought him into her home, and showed him literally the experience of the 5 senses.
On the first visit, Maude introduced the sense of taste, inviting him to tea, and allowing Harold to taste something out of the ordinary. Following his next visit Maude treated him to the sense of smell with the "smell machine" so that Harold could smell the different things in life, to enjoy and recognize them. This was the same with the sense of sight and Maude's painting, she revealed to Harold the mixture of feeling that could be expressed on canvas...
