The role of women in early Greek society: Women in a Greek society were often
controlled throughout their whole lives. Growing up, the women were controlled by their
fathers, and once they get married their husbands would have control over them. The girls
in this society would get married in their teens, often to a man that was in his thirty's.
Most of the time the fathers would choose their daughters husbands for them. Marriages
have been arranged from a very early age, depending if she came from a wealthy family.
The Greek girl didn't get to know or meet her husband until the dowry, which was a
women that brought into her marriage whatever goods her family could supply, or goods
she could supply herself. The brides family might provide slaves, clothing jewels, or even
furniture. These belongings would then become the property of her husband.
A women that had just been married would be very excited to fulfill her duty as a
wife and to take care of a child. The childbirth usually took place within the home...
