There are many memories that people hold dear to their hearts from their childhood. For some, it may be staying at Grandma's house or getting to go downtown and get the ice cream cone with two scoops. But there is one thing that almost everybody loves from their childhood: nursery rhymes. Mozart's variations on "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" is one of his more popular works because of the familiarity of the theme. Mozart uses different musical conventions related to theme and variations form to elaborate the simple melody of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." Mozart created a piece for piano in which listening is fun.
According to "The New Harvard Dictionary of Music," a theme in the context of "theme and variations" usually refers to an entirely self-contained melody or short piece.
