"I was a little drunk. Not drunk in any positive sense but just enough to be careless" (29). Jake Barnes, the narrator of the novel; constantly drinks because of his problems in life. Oppression may lead to many other problems in Barnes life such as his drinking problem, being impotent and love torture.
Throughout of the novel, Barnes seems to being constantly drinking. One reason for his drinking problem is due to the destruction he encounter while fighting in World War II. "My head started to work. The old grievance. Well, it was a rotten way to be wounded and flying on a joke front like the Italian" (38). During the War Barnes is wounded in his groin area and becomes impotent which becomes a problem because Lady Ashley (Brett) cannot find a solution to their sexual dilemma...
