Being at the San Antonio State Hospital has impacted me greatly in that I was able to see how many people live and cope with their mental illnesses. I am thankful that I was able to experience my clinical rotation at S.A.S.H. because I was able to see all the mental illness that we learned about in class, but was also able to apply my knowledge in my clinical experience.
Before enrolling in Psych 3520 I had no clue, much less cared, about how members of society lived and dealt with their mental illness because it is not something that is dwelled upon by influences such as the media, parents, and etc... As the semester is winding down I have found a great respect for those that live with mental illness because it is not something that can be cured or put into remission, but it requires maintenance and close friends and relatives to help those cope with the fact that they have a mental illness. While also being enrolled in Psych 3520 I am also taking Chronic Health 3610, and I find it odd that a chronic health problem is defined as something that persists longer than six months, but no instructor has transitioned that mental illnesses are also a chronic health issue...
