Volpone Ben Jonson Summary Following is a summary of Ben Jonson’s Volpone. This summary should, by no means, be taken as a substitute for the text of the play. It should only help you in understanding the plot of the play. The Prologue promises “profit with your pleasure.” Act One Scene one: Volpone embraces his gold. He tells Mosca that he glories in gaining wealth through wit. Mosca flatters him, then summons the dwarf, the eunuch, and the fool. He will sham illness, pretending to name each dupe his heir so that they will bring him rich gifts. Scene two: Nano, Androgino, and Castrone enter with Mosca. They entertain Volpone but are interrupted by Voltore. Hearing that Voltore is to give him a piece of plate, Volpone prepares for his performance of a man on his deathbed. Mosca expresses his amusement. Scene three: Voltore offers the plate to Volpone. Mosca promises Voltore that he will inherit all. Scene four: Corbaccio arrives, inquiring about Volpone’s health and bringing drugs that Mosca suspects would instantly kill his master. He offers Mosca a “bag of bright chequines” for Volpone. When he leaves, Volpone Leaps from his “deathbed,” laughs at the jest and praises Mosca. Scene five: Corvino arrives, bearing a pearl and a diamond. Mosca promises Corvino that he will be Volpone heir and demonstrates Volpone’s frailty by shouting insults into his ear. Satisfied, Corvino exits. Mosca tells Volpone that Lady Would-be is inquiring for his health, then tells him of the beauty of Corvino’s wife, Celia.
