Jose Armas's story El Tonto Del Barrio can be perceived as a type of old wives tale: leave well enough alone or if its not broken don't fix it. Romero Estrada is Golden Heights Centro's resident character that is a bit touched, the community cares for Romero in their own way. He is accepted for who he is and his work of sweeping the streets is his contribution to the community. All this changes when Seferino decides he can make Romero's life better. Barelas knows this is a mistake. Why it is wrong Barelas is not sure, he wants to believe his son Seferino is right and that he knows more than he. But his gut instinct disputes that.
Romero Estrada is a man who is not the brightest man and in actuality is a bit challenged mentally. Romero loves to sing he sings songs that come from somewhere inside his own mind. But he lives in a community where he does a service, a job if you will; he sweeps the streets in front of all the businesses and does it very well...
