I agree that the timing of Howard's decision to send troops to the Gulf undermined responsible and representative democracy in Australia.
Majority of the people living in Australia believe that Prime Minister John Howard should not be sending troops to war without UN approval. His decision to support the super power America and its ally Britain in declaring war on Iraq even if the UN does not give its approval, has not been very well accepted by the nation. Therefore a lot of anti-war protests and peace marches have been held during the last week in the various states to protest Australia's support of America and Britain to go to war with Iraq. People have the right to protest to express their views and beliefs. The most practical solution would be to contain the Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, through weapons inspections. Containment ensures that if he was to use the weapons of mass destruction he would pay a high price.
There is a general feeling that contributing to the war could cause anti-Australian feeling to erupt throughout the Muslim world. War will cause so much loss of innocent lives and are putting our soldiers at risk of a chemical attack which could be avoided. If war takes place, at least 260,000 could die in an attack on Iraq...
