The role of a manager was once viewed in an operational context in which the emphasis was placed on “administration and control”. This view has since been updated and it was expressed by Professor Sir Roland Smith as being based on “innovation, marketing and risk”, where the emphasis is now put on planning, developing and changing an organisation instead of merely running it. The organisational environment of today is very complex with working methods and processes changing rapidly. It is therefore imperative that managers be dynamic and able to manage such changes. The main challenge for modern managers is to maintain control over the processes of the organization through leadership, inspiration, directing and decision making, as well as, recognizing the need for changes and effectively and continuously managing those changes. Even though change is usually of a technical nature, managing change is essentially about people and not concepts and ideas. This is especially true, and difficult, when the change required is opposed to the assumptions and beliefs of the organisation’s members.
