Response to ˇ§The Fall of the House of Usherˇ¨ The first thing that comes to mind when Edgar Allan Poe is mentioned: horror, fear, derangement, dark, gloomyˇKˇK which were the very descriptions that popped in my head. I expected another scary story that had a sickening ending, but after looking in depth and analyzing this story, I got more than I could ever have expected. In this story, Poe looks deep into the human mind and discusses what most people would consider an uncomfortable subject, insanity. Poe carefully sets down an eerie mysterious mood in the beginning, carefully plotting out all of his descriptions, creating an atmosphere of suspense where the reader would want to find the origin of such eerie mystery. He presents two main characters, Roderick and the narrator. Roderick is what many of us would consider an insane man that society shuns, the person who lives the life of a hermit in a large mansion.
