Lack of oppurtinity for youths is one of the cheif cuases of crime in Jamaica

Crime is again top of the national agenda and the largest set of deviants and victims of deviants behaviour are under 30 years old. According to Government sources, approximately 70 per cent of major crimes are committed by persons under 30 and approximately 80 per cent of victims of major crime fall in the similar age bracket. This indicates that as a society we are failing our young people, unable to provide them with guidance, opportunies, hope and security, and by extension, to reduce the risk of
them engaging in deviant behaviour.
The evidence suggests that our young people are restless, with more uncertainties about the future, and a great deal of time to think about it. with less than 1 per cent annual average economic growth over the last decade, the job seekers are many, and the oppurtunities are few. It's like having a timetable to nowhere, but with on going demands for basic surival. An examinqtion of the job market tends to support this position.
