In You've Got Mail, Joe's life was affected by technology in a way common to people now a day. He was just a regular guy with a regular life that met a girl through a computer which happened to be a person he was fighting against. At the same time he was using technology to run his business at his book sore.
Kathleen is sort of the same in a matter of speaking. She too ran a book store, met a guy on the internet, and was just a regular girl. Although she was new to computers, her boyfriend was still obsessed with a typewriter. But her life was still affected, if it wasn't for new technology, she wouldn't have been in that mess, well at least not as big of one.
The question, "Does technology allow us to be more open, or dishonest?" is a trick question. It allows us both to be more open and also dishonest in ways...
