Literature and Its Importance
George Orwell is one of the most prestigious writers of his time. George Orwell did not only write famous books like "Animal Farm" and "Nineteen Eighty-Four", but also many essays and newspaper articles. Orwell's writings have influenced what the authors of today write. "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism."(Orwell) One of his most inspiring essays is "A Hanging" in which many men are being punished for their crimes. Orwell seems to put himself in the position of the condemned men at the jail. Most of Orwell's writings are about his life. Orwell failed to win a university scholarship and without the opportunity to continue his education he went to Burma and served in the administration of the Indian Imperial Police from 1922 to 1927 when he resigned in part due to his growing dislike of British imperialism, a dislike he vocalized in his A Hanging (1931) (Web). He went through many hardships throughout his short life and he portrays that in his writings.
The story takes place in a Burma jail and paints a very good picture of the weather type and the horizon...
