I believe that increased language diversity in Canada promotes greater equality and tolerance. Having a great sense of pride in who we are helps us come to terms with being Canadian.
In countries such as America, individual cultures are celebrated in many ways, such as traditional holidays and restaurants of ethnic cuisine. However, to be an American you must give up your birth nationality status. This is, in a way, a deterrent for those wishing to live in America.
In Canada, we too recognize traditional holidays, such as the Jewish Hanukkah, and ethnic cuisine restaurants, such as the many Japanese, Indian and German restaurants in Winnipeg alone. An important point for immigrants is that you can become a Canadian citizen without having to give up your birth citizenship, and this, in my view is a strengthening point for Canada. The Canadian Government not only acknowledges distinct societal groups, but also allows them to keep both their original citizenship and Canadian citizenship. This allows them a sense of pride and restoration for their culture, as well as the pride that is associated with being Canadian.
I do not agree that "increase language diversity" is threatening our national unity...
