Weapon Advancements
Throughout all of history, certain civilizations have been more powerful than others. Sometimes the "powerhouses" are powerful because of good military leaders that imply well-thought out tactics or sometimes they get lucky by means of a storm like the one the English benefited from when they destroyed the Spanish Armada. But in most cases it all comes down to the weaponry of the two enemies. If one nation has superior weapons, then they should easily be able to destroy their adversaries. Because conquering others used to be such an important part of life, it was important to be powerful enough to defend yourself and even expand your borders. All civilizations to date have made advancements in weaponry out of necessity to survive and conquer others.
Of all the early civilizations, the Assyrians effectively built and maintained one of the most powerful armies ever seen to man. They did this not only by good planning but also with new inventions.
