Shall We Dance
Shall We Dance directed by Masayuki Suo was a very interesting film. It kept me well entertained and very much impressed with how similar it was to some American films I have seen.
The movie shocked me in a couple ways, but one specific way is the way married couples act towards each other and the gender roles they have in Japanese society. The roles of males and females were very diverse in this movie, much different from the United States. The movie was released in 1996, showing that Japan looked at women much more as minorities, and also less as affectionate wives than we have in our U.S. history. In the beginning of the film, the narrator spoke about how men and women do not say I love you or embrace in public. To do this or mention this was uncalled for. The movie also showed married couples sleeping in the same room but in two different beds...
