A Separate Peace is considered a great American classic. It displays the fears and struggles of a world at war, slowly evolving into an epiphany on the main character’s part that reveals “the true nature of evil.” Gene Forrester, narrator of the book, is constantly fighting with himself, though the psychological and emotional battles are not always war-related. John Knowles, in an effort to save his novel from critics and bad reviews, wrote A Separate Peace so that the theme of evil appears a lot larger than it was originally meant to be. It covers a toned down side story that involved the boys’ sexuality. The clues are hidden throughout the novel in Gene’s intense physical attraction to the other boys, his way of thinking, and his relation to his schoolmates. That’s right, folks, Gene Forrester is gay. It is obvious that Gene has a strong attraction to the other boys.
