Health officials are becoming concerned about the overuse of some antibiotics, for example penicillin. Since antibiotics work against a cells metabolism and viruses don’t have a metabolism, antibiotics do not work on viruses, only bacteria. And most colds are caused by viruses. By taking antibiotics for colds when they’re not needed, the antibiotics instead go after the bacteria in your body.
