"The Crucible", written by Arthur Miller, is about the horrible and gruesome Salem Witch Trials. Many innocent people were accused of being witches or wizards. What began as fun and games eventually becomes a massacre. This story is very tragic and is worth reading by all. Act I Summary: [top] The story begins in Reverend Parris's home, where his daughter, Betty, is lying in bed. Betty and several other girls were caught dancing in the woods, which was strictly forbidden. To escape punishment both Betty and another girl Ruth Putnam, decide to play sick. Doctors have no luck finding anything wrong with the two girls, however, which begins the witchcraft suspicions. Reverend Parris then summons for Reverend Hale, an expert on removing evil spirits. Abigail Williams, Reverend Parris’s niece, is the evil influence on the girls. Not only does she have a little affair with John Proctor, she drinks blood to the death of Elizabeth Proctor. When Hale arrives, he immediately starts questioning the girls.
