Women in Fear
The story "Women in Fear" is about seven sisters from Baghdad. The story talks about all of the women's different fears and why they fear the things they do. One of the sisters is afraid of cancer, another sister is afraid of her husband, another sister the men she works with and one of the sisters is afraid of the war that may take her husbands life. Except for the cancer all of the women's fears revolve around men. The sister who narrates shares a story of a bus trip that she and her seven sisters once took. At the end of the trip one of her sisters is dancing with her bosoms out and her hair blowing in the wind; all of these things aren't permissible for women to do in Iraqi culture. A man attempts to strike the sister for what she has done and he is assaulted by the other six in defense of their sister.
"Women in Fear" is sad story about how women are treated in repressive society's including Iraq. Iraq is not the only place in the world where women are viewed as less than men, it is a common practice in most third world countries. Women are not only discriminated against in third world countries either, even here in the United States of America where such a high value is placed on equality women are still unable to receive fair treatment...
