The poem " the living Temple" is an extended metaphor which compares the human body to different objects. Because Holmes uses the human body as a main object in his poems, the critic concentrates on how Holmes uses the terminology of an anatomist and a physiologist in his poems.
The author of the criticism on Holmes believes that Holmes wrote in revenge for the silence imposed on him by the tedious and interminable talk of his patients about themselves. The critic considered Holmes as a man of science and a man of the world; who was a humorist and a wit. He also considered Holmes' writing as unacademic and devoid of pedantry; like if Holmes was just saying what he was thinking. It continues to make the reader think for himself, while not attaining the high seriousness or deep seriousness of enduring philosophy . Despite it's acuteness, it's liveliness, it's briskness, it's vivacity, it never lacks seriousness without ever becoming ponderous. Although the critic is about Holmes' style in his poems, in general, you can see what Brander Matthews, the author of the critique, is talking about in the poem " The Living Temple."
