In most cases, television viewers, particularly of lifestyle television, prefer to watch domestic programs. This preference is partly understood in terms of semiotics. For example, if we break down a sign into its relative components we can see how the relationships vary within e.g. signifier1 to signifiedx (x = 1+) or vice versa. In other words a sign meaning it not fixed but is dependent on the context in which it belongs.
In addition if we apply Thwaite's (1994, p.67) definition of text a combination of signs - we can clearly state that a text meaning depends on the culture (context) in which it is produced. Therefore if it is relayed in a different cultural context, it will cause confusion and uncertainty. The viewer won't be able to understand the text, as the social codes (dress, architecture, gesture, etc) are unfamiliar...
