Jealousy and Envy
Gene was not a true friend to Phineas, he was nothing more than a follower and a leech who wanted desperately not only to be like Phineas but to become Phineas. Gene was self-absorbed and egotistical and only befriended Phineas to try and steal his identity and share his glory. Gene was unloyal and untrustworthy and one might question if Gene had any feelings of compassion toward Phineas at all. The only thing that Gene was interested in concerning Phineas was when and what would be his downfall.

Is it not obvious that Gene befriended Phineas to try and share Phineas's glory and try and steal Phineas's identity? Why else would Gene hang on to Phineas's word and try on his clothes.
Also Gene was untrustworthy so Gene could not have been considered a friend...
