Job Coaching vs. Performance Appraisal
A Questionable Comparison
Job coaching is a modern business strategy administered by internal managers or even by outside coaches, and used to motivate and guide employees in specific directions or to improve overall performance. Performance appraisals are just what they sound like, they are various rating methods used to measure employee performance. This essay will attempt to convince the reader that these two processes should not be compared at all. I will argue that they should be, but rarely are, used together to improve the performance of employees, teams, and entire organizations.
Different from on-the-job training for first-level employees, job coaching is used to broaden the skills of employees and to prepare them for future jobs. The practice of job coaching involves the giving of instructions, comments, and suggestions to the subordinate by the manager or supervisor. Job coaching takes many forms, and is done off the job through seminars, conferences, or even college classes, as well as on the job, through lateral transfers, understudy assignments, special projects, and other strategies. Training methods for nonmanagerial employees include on-the-job training, apprenticeships, which are an extension of on-the-job training, cooperative training, which combines on-the-job experience with formal classes, and internship programs...
