City of Dreams and Ragged Dick
The rich came expecting to increase their wealth. ... These were the dreams of the Europeans who ventured across the Atlantic Ocean to the New World in America. The English Pilgrims settled in the area which is now Massachusetts in 1620 while the Dutch created Nieuw Amsterdam in what would become New York City. How these courageous men and women set out to fulfill their dreams is the subject of two contrasting novels, City of Dreams, by Beverly Swerling and Ragged Dick, by Horatio Alger.
Covering the history of New York City from 1661-1798, City of Dreams tells the tale of a brother and sister, Lucas Turner, a barber/surgeon, and Sally Turner, an apothecary.
