The United States' failure in the war in Vietnam was due to several factors. First, and foremost, was the erosion of public support at home for the war. As the war dragged on with seemingly no end, American public support diminished significantly. Second, the failure of American political leaders to appreciate and understand the enemy they faced in Vietnam played a large role in the United States' failure. Political leaders never truly understood the historical background of the Vietnamese and their determination to be independent. Third, U.S. military leaders never adapted adequately to fighting in Vietnam. After years of warfare, American military commanders continued to follow a disastrous policy of seeking out and attempting to destroy the enemy.
