Printing Press
One of the most important inventions of all times was the printing press invented by German Goldsmith, Johan Gutenberg in 1454. Before the printing press was invented, there were several simple printing devices. Examples are the royal seal, signet ring, the punches used by goldsmiths and silversmiths, and the rubber stamp.
The Middle Age was an era where the clergy was the educated class and the Catholic Church was the dominant power. Scribes and copiers worked endlessly to write documents by hand. Previous inventions of paper and printing ink made this possible, but there were indeed problems with this process of copying. First there were not many individuals with the capability or education needed to read and write. Second, it took a great deal of time to complete on page of a document, let alone a book. Thirdly, incompetent errors were easily made, possibly due to a variety of reasons such as fatigue, lack of adequate resources and limited education.
