The Erie Canal
The Erie Canal was a marvel of society for the period of the beginning of the 1800's. The Canal could directly be linked to the direct expansion of the West in both population and industry. It was the tireless effort of some essential people for 12 years that yielded the Erie Canal.
In the beginning before the Canal, it would take a company up to 5 Months in order to ship big industrial products from the coast to it's in-land destination. On top of that was the high cost of labor and maintenance for the expedition such as fuel, men and transportion where some of the high cost of travelling on land. In 1817, the Legislature gave the "ok" to build a Canal from New York to Lake Erie. It was a monumentous task at the time of conception. So work began in late of 1817 and was carried on tirelessly for 8 years until completion in 1825. The cost of construction materials, man-power, architects, engineers, and insurance cost no less than $7,143,000.00 dollars to the good-willing tax payers of The United States of America...
